∞ Microsoft's Secret Weapon Against Google Maps -- Open Source

A nice analysis which is still missing a point: the Bing Maps brand will be eclipsed by Nokia Maps. The real winner might actually be more Nokia than Microsoft.

One of the many areas where Google is far ahead of Microsoft is mapping, with Google Maps by far the dominant map service on the Internet. Microsoft is employing an under-the-radar approach to fighting back, lending big support and big dollars to the open source map project OpenStreetMap. It looks as if the tactic is starting to pay off.

Preliminary results show users from Google IP address ranges in India deleting, moving and abusing OSM data including subtle edits like reversing one-way streets.

In fact over the last year we have had over 102 thousand hits on OSM using at least 17 accounts from this Google IP.
