∞ The top 20 mobile apps for web designers

From NetMagazine.com:

Since the original iPad’s release, the device has come under fire from, frankly, died-in-the-wool PC fans, claiming it’s for consumption only. Anyone who’s used an iPad – or, for that matter, a capable smartphone or alternative tablet – knows that’s hogwash. Sure, few designers want to set fire to their PCs or Macs and go mobile-only, but when you are away from your set-up, the current generation of apps enables you to work while on the go. And when you’re surrounded by all your technology, the best apps can still inspire and prove useful. With the help of designers and developers, we unearth 20 of the best.

★ Tumblr, why do you hate web standards ?

Granted, my website may not totally respect web standards but Tumblr is not really helping us here.  I usually make use of the W3C validator whenever developing a website or a template and I try to tweak my HTML as much as I can. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Tumblr platform which is both very easy but also very customizable as well.

However Tumblr is sneakily adding not just one - as they used to - but two different elements in your code. You are not going to see it in your Dashboard. In fact you are not going to see it either by viewing the source of your website in your browser. There is no way you can remove those two elements.

Head over here, and try to validate your website. Do not forget to check the box “Show source”. You’ll see that Tumblr is adding a JavaScript at the top your header but also an iFrame at the very bottom. Check after the break to see what they look like. I wish Tumblr would make an effort reduce the number of errors they produce.

∞ Responsive Content Navigator with CSS3

The slide effect is actually pretty cool and very dynamic.

From tympanus.net:

Today we’ll show you how to create a content navigator with CSS only. The idea is to have several slides or content layers that we’ll show or hide using the :target pseudo-class. With CSS transitions we can make the slides appear in a fancy way. We’ll also make the whole thing responsive.

★ Time for a theme upgrade (updated 2)

I’m on holidays and as most of the time on holidays, I’m geeking with my Tumblr template :) This one was actually developed some times ago but not really adopted over here.

∞ Don't just optimize your site for WebKit

…and I guess I’ll have to check my code as well

Call from Daniel Glazman :

Not so long ago, IE6 was the over-dominant browser on the Web. Technically, the Web was full of works-only-in-IE6 web sites and the other browsers, the users were crying. IE6 is dead, this time is gone, and all browsers vendors including Microsoft itself rejoice. Gone? Not entirely… IE6 is gone, the problem is back.

WebKit, the rendering engine at the heart of Safari and Chrome, living in iPhones, iPads and Android devices, is now the over-dominant browser on the mobile Web and technically, the mobile Web is full of works-only-in-WebKit web sites while other browsers and their users are crying. Many sites are sniffing the browser’s User-Agent string and filtering out non-WebKit browsers. As in the past with IE6, it’s not a question of innovation but a question of hardware market dominance and software bundled with hardware. But there is an aspect of the problem we did not have during the IE6 era: these web sites are also WebKit-specific because they use only “experimental” CSS properties prefixed with -webkit-* and not their Mozilla, Microsoft or Opera counterparts. So even if the browser sniffing goes away, web sites will remain broken for non-WebKit browsers…
