★ newscenter : my personal news magazine

Being French and reading English sure is pretty cool but quite difficult when you are looking for a news-related website. Especially when you like webdesign. When tools out there are not satisfactory, you’re left with creating your own news website.

During my summer holidays, far away from my crazy Google Reader feeds, I was looking for a new website with rich content that I could actually take time to consume. There are plenty of services out there from Yahoo! News to MSNBC. Yet several problems came up quickly. I wanted to get both French and US news on a customizable interface that would also present rich medias.

I looked at personal homepage agregators like My Yahoo! My MSN or Netvibes. I tried to customize them with CSS tweaker extensions like AdBlock but in the end, it was pretty hard to get what I  wanted.  Also there are desktop applications like Pulp for Mac OS X but I found them limited as well.

So in August I decided to see what a custom magazine would look like if I built it myself. I came up with newscenter. A very early draft of what I have in mind. I took the nice MSNBC header and agregated few feeds. I guess I’ll be looking at other way to do such a news magazine, especially with the new CSS3 layout elements that pop-up online.

But then, deep down I wish there was a web service that would offer a deep customization.
